Spring Update

Spring has sprung and compost is flying off the shelves like hot cakes. Thanks in part to nice weather (we are calling it “Springamaggedon”) and the need to clear out of our old site we sold more compost in Feb than we ever had in a single month. This is the time of year we get excited to see friends and customers met over the years and to check in on how their farms, gardens and projects are developing. Spring is exciting.

Something else happened recently, Dirt Hugger turned FIVE on March 8th!?! It’s really hard to believe that we’ve made it past the toddler stage and are now full blown pre-schoolers.   According to statistic brain only 49% of manufacturing start ups make it past the 4th year of operation. (There are some other amazing statistics on why start ups fail- check it out if you’re interested). We are proud, humbled and honored to be a part of the 49%.

Many people ask -we are open and operating at our new site in Dallesport, Washington. It is located at 168 Highway 197- 2 miles from the center of The Dalles bridge on 197 on the right hand side (right across from Gillmore Fish Smokehouse).

We’ve only been at the new site for a few months and aren’t nearly finished with construction, but we’ve noticed some major changes. The main thing is a major increase in efficiency. We haven’t crunched all the numbers, but anecdotally our front end loaders used to run 6-8 hrs per day at the old site, at the new site we are running a loader about 2 hrs/day. That is an enormous savings!

Here are some photos of what’s been happening at the Hugger lately. Thanks for being a part of it.

You guys are awesome. I have watched as you have surmounted problem after problem and never given up. What a gift you are to the community of people who understand and appreciate what you are doing. And making better food. Right time in the flow of things.
Could you put in where people can purchase your black gold? Especially people who don’t have pickups.
Continued hard work, working smart and spreading the dirt and the word!

    • Hi J Nels, thanks for your comment. We appreciate the support. The retail section of our site lists places where our compost can be purchased. For people without a pick up there are delivery options or bagged options as well. Hope this helps…
